Not My Fault....conclusion...
My story is one of a God who chose to not leave me to myself; who chose to not let the fire consume me; who chose to not let the waters drown me; who chose to not let some ragged disease eat away my flesh. My story is one of a Merciful God who flew to my rescue, lifted me out of a slimy pit, washed me clean - and then set my feet upon a Rock!
My story is one of a man who chose to make the same mistakes over and over, and his God forgave him - over and over.
My story is one of a God who is a Ferocious, Flaming, Fiery, Fierce, Passionate, Wild, Romantic Lover who stooped down to a wretch like Jimmy Meeks - and raised him up. The scripture goes so far as to say, “Knowing, beloved, His CHOICE of you.” Consider what that means. If you are a Christian, you are so because He chose you. And He chose you because he WANTED you.
It was not because you had any special talents. It was not because you were gifted, or attractive, or possessed any special abilities. None of that! He chose you simply because HE WANTED YOU!
This is one of the great attributes of God. He loves us because of Who he is - not because of who we are, or what we have done. He is NOT impressed with our achievements, or awed by our accomplishments. He is drawn to the homeless bum and the crack-addict whore, as much as He toward the rich and famous. His loving eye is on that man living in a cardboard box under a bridge, as well as the celebrity walking the red carpet to receive her Oscar.
But He didn’t stop there. Though I “died,” I also “came back to life!” You see, God does not expect, nor does He desire, for us to live a life with no aspirations or dreams. So, He fills our hearts with expectations that are beyond our wildest dreams. Thus the second part of the words of Jesus I quoted above:
“I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit...”
So - I am not only “selected,” I am “sent.” Read it again; “I appointed you to GO...”
And where do we “go?” Out into a wretched, screwed up, backwards-operating world that has no idea how life should be lived, how legit dreams can be fulfilled, or how happiness can be attained. And I will tell you: I WANT TO BE HAPPY! I want to experience maximum joy, sustaining peace, and abundant life. I am a greedy person: I WANT IT ALL!
I realize that not everyone wakes up joyful about charging into the world to make a difference. And let me assure you; there are days I am hell to live with! But the excitement about being “sent” is the affect that Jesus has had on my heart.
He has given me a passion, a burning desire, to better the world I live in. He has instilled in me a longing to love my wife and embrace my children. This is what happens when GRACE captures the heart: It is flooded with thankfulness for its visit, while at the same time prompted to share its story.
I’ve been a cop for almost 30 years. And I am discovering that the love He puts in my heart makes me not just wiling, but eager, to do what is right and just. I find myself waking up in the morning excited about the day before me, knowing there will be countless opportunities to serve my citizens and fellow officers. This, as I have said, is what it means to know I am “sent.” I am, as Jesus said, “appointed” to go into the world and “bear fruit.” Bearing this in mind, I find incredible joy in the most menial of tasks, whatever they may be. I have even learned to experience joy when changing a flat tire!
It is not by accident that you have stumbled across this website today. You have been drawn here by the Spirit of God. It is God himself who brought you here, for it is His intent to impart to you a new life, a new beginning, a new joy, a new peace, a new excitement that you have not yet encountered.
it is God who wants to raise you from the dead. He knew about you BEFORE you were even conceived in your mother’s belly. It was His “idea” that you would be born! You are no “accident.” Today is YOUR DAY!
And what makes me think that God has such generous and kind thoughts toward you? Because He is a Radical, Fanatical, Wild Giver! Would He hold back from you after He has given you so much?
“What has He given me Jimmy?” HE HAS GIVEN YOU THE LIFE OF HIS SON! He sent Him to this world to bear your sins so you could be forgiven, cleansed, and start your life anew. Don’t waste any more time. It’s time to “die” - so you can be resurrected!
